“We have one, sir!” the captain announced to the officer in charge of Prisoner Admissions as the Knights dropped their protesting burden on the jail’s flagstone floor.

Deputy Marco peered at the undersized frog reclaiming his dignity as he stood erect to face his captors.

“Youse are makin’ a mistake,” Barry declared.

The captain bopped him on the head to shut him up.

The moaning had grown to groaning by the time Elliot and Cassandra found the pitiful, tattered creature the sounds escaped from. It lay surrounded by the crushed shell of its recent unborn meal. Cassandra gasped. Elliot stopped in his track.

#Memorial Day 2017

Screen Shot 2017-05-29 at 14.16.07

Normally, we think about all those who fought for American ideals and dreams on Memorial Day. I can’t help but feel it more personally, too. My dad was part of The Greatest Generation, the oldest generation with any living members who fought in a World War.

He was 19 and a chemical engineering major at UW Madison in 1944, when he enlisted in the US Army. He spent his 6 weeks in boot camp, and was immediately sent to France. Two months later, he and a German soldier faced each other in a trench. The German’s bullet hit the pen in PFC Ranscht’s left breast pocket, and glanced off into his left arm, shattering the humerus. When he returned to the USA, he left his left arm in France.

“Be at ease, Madam Duggla,” the King said, “I only wish to speak with you.”

Wiggling in a vain attempt to loosen her arms from the grip of the Knights who’d brought her, the old crone eyed the King with sullen suspicion. “Then send your jailers away,” she growled.

The Knights of Service worked together in silence tending to the injured, removing the fallen, gathering the weapons left behind. Someone had taken the initiative to mount the heads of the vanquished Marauders on pikes and stab them into the ground as a crude fence of morbid monuments facing outward along the border.

Let them feel their triumph with their grief, King Arnie thought. Soon the day will come when we feel sufficiently secure and ashamed enough to take it down. Today was not that day.

“They’ll be all right, won’t they?” Cassandra meandered alongside Elliot, facing the sun as it hung above the distant mountains.

“I hope so,” he said, caressing her neck as they paused to share yet another sweet, unhurried kiss. “The Knights certainly have the training and determination to keep Bog safe. And everyone we met seemed devoted to King Arnie.” Being alone with his love, beginning their journey into a life together, he found he wasn’t nearly so eager to stay and fight someone else’s war.

Trapped between the Knights of Service and Madam Duggla’s furry honker friends, the few remaining Marauders came to a quick and sticky end.

King Arnie surveyed the battlefield. How could so brief a skirmish cost so much?

The river closing over him, Barry grabbed at the rope-like loop cinched around his leg, tightening as it dragged him backward through the murk. He plucked and pulled, trying to loosen its grip while it scraped him across the rocky bottom, racing back toward Bog.

Duggla the Crone hauled her flabby form out into the open and limped to a halt before the King.

“The enemy loves you. You haven’t a prayer,” she cackled.

The King arrived at the southern border with a squad of Knights at his back. More Knights stood guard in a line that stretched along the border as far as anyone’s eyes could see. They were armed, alert, and determined to protect their homeland against whatever it was that waited just beyond the trees.
