Beneath the Wildlands’ Hill, Commandant Marabunta sensed insistent vibrations in her sleep, and woke to bits of soil from the dormitory’s domed ceiling pelting onto her head.

“What the…?” The source was localized, stationary, and relatively small. Nothing to worry about, she concluded, but too annoying to ignore. Rousting herself from the comfort of her bed, she never even considered sending a scout.

The absolute dark in Leftenant Chaz’s brain gave way to the starry dark of night. And pain. Pain in his shoulders. Pain in his—

“What the hell—?”

His wings were gone.

What happened? Clutching his head, he squeezed his eyes shut to sort out the confused images now swirling in his brain. Night raids. Captives. Flying home. A tearful young face begging to be mastered.

“Hey, what about King Arnie of Bog and his Knights of Service? They don’t write… they don’t call…” You, trying to remember what they were doing 50 episodes ago.

When we last saw the fine fighting forces of Bog, King Arnie was honoring Lady Connie, her family, and their neighbors for helping to win the final battle against the Marauders. Well, final for now. Together, Bog and Fen had repelled the enemy without conquering them, and no one was foolish enough to think the war was over.

So what have they been doing?

Holding Cassandra close, Elliot was barely aware of the approaching buzz before pain stabbed into his neck.

His world dissolved in a cloud of black mist.

Shivering and shaken, he awoke in the shadows of late afternoon. Alone.

“Cassandra?… Cassandra!”

“Stand down, soldier,” the King laughed. “You’re alarming our ally.”

Confused but obedient, young Scout Philbin scanned the Knights’ faces before stammering, “Uh… King Arnie, I’ve located the… um, Marauders.” He threw a quick glance at Sirehta. “They’re less than five minutes ahead, raiding the winter stores of the tree dwellers.”

King Arnie’s calm faced Sirehta’s anger. “You can see we are not demons, flaming or otherwise. We are only protecting our homeland from those who want to harm us. Where is your home, soldier?”

“My home is gone.”

“Destroyed?”

Weapon in hand, King Arnie faced the noise. Half a dozen Knights moved soundlessly into the bracken, encircling the suspected threat.

“You’re surrounded. Show yourself,” the King commanded.

King Arnie led half his Knights of Service north through the bracken, paralleling the eastern road to the river. Lieutenant Terrance led the other half along the western route. Teams of scouts boomeranged from and between each division to update their leaders about the path ahead and the other’s progress.

“Your Greatness,” the King’s fifth scouting team reported, “there’s another vanquished red ten minutes ahead, but no sign yet of the Marauders.”

Time stopped in the beat before the gasp.

King Arnie’s call to assemble shook the woods as the few remaining reds scattered to the north with the wolves ripping at their heels. The entanglement of Marauders watched their foes’ run, first with cautious recoiling, then with a surging attack on the retreating Knights of Service.

Immediately, flapping, biting rain pelted their eyes with relentless teeth, tearing at their scales, spilling their cold, black blood.

“What are those things?” Barry’s question quaked with fear.
