Weapon in hand, King Arnie faced the noise. Half a dozen Knights moved soundlessly into the bracken, encircling the suspected threat.

“You’re surrounded. Show yourself,” the King commanded.

Silence. Thrashing commotion. A grunt of pain.

Dragging the intruder into the clearing, the Knights kept him fully stretched out.

“What’s your name, soldier?” King Arnie asked.

The viper glared at him. “Sirehta, Bringer of Death.” With each syllable, vapor escaped his mouth to hang in a putrid cloud about his head.

“Where are you from, son?”

Sirehta’s eyes narrowed. Defiance lifted his chin. “I am not your son. Why ask you these questions? They told me of the flaming demons, and I fear you not. Burn me, pour my blood into your cups, but never shall you take my soul.”
