Lying awake beneath the shimmering sky long after Darwin’s family had retreated to the shadowy corners of their web, Teddy wasn’t sure he was still glad his father had gone to the war, even just overnight. It was okay for Trevor and Barry — they were Knights, not dads. They didn’t have anybody counting on them for hugs and stories and tucking in at bedtime.

I hope Daddy didn’t think he wouldn’t be brave if he stayed home, Teddy fretted to himself. I hope he knows he’s the bravest Dad in Bog — in the whole world!

To Elliot’s great relief, the ancient priestess’s heart did not explode. Step after step, gasp after gasp, rest after breathless rest, she made it to the top. Standing with her eyes closed in light filtered green through the trees, her shoulders heaved with each ragged inhalation.

“You’re right,” Elliot said, “it’s marvelous.” Watching her ravaged breathing, he added, “I could just stand here and soak it in for hours.”

But it took only a few minutes for the High Priestess to recover.

“What do you see here?” she asked as they followed the emerald light being pushed by the spreading carpet of approaching night.

Low and halting, like a song overwhelmed by tears, Pristalwhisp’s melodious voice told them her tale.

“I had a family — sisters and brothers and a mother who cared for all of us with gentle discipline. She used to tell us we were destined for love if we would heed her counsel. We learned cleanliness, peacefulness, and the joy of being stroked. Then, one by one, we were taken away. I never saw any of them again.

Cassandra’s gasp of alarm breathed out as compassion. “Oh, you poor thing!”

The last gleam of daylight glimmered in sunset blue eyes, shadowed and lonely, tired beyond life, sorrowful and aching. Grime and cobwebs overlay a ragged gray coat that didn’t quite cover patches of skin ripped naked bearing scratches, scars, and seeping sores, the trophies of lost battles, the badges of survival.

Lowering herself to the ground, the feline groaned. “Who are you? Have you come to feast on my decay?”

Backing out of the cavern’s entrance, Arturo whispered, “Come on, Cassandra! We can’t stay here!”

“Yes, we can,” she hissed. “We won’t hurt you,” she called. “We’re just looking for a safe place to rest. Surely there’s room for all of us in here.”

An enormous body shifted the air as it rose and moved laboriously out of the hollow to lie down in the last of the light. Deep guttural sounds became rumbled words.

“Are you ready to die?”

“What about Cassandra and Arturo?” You. Wondering.

“Do you think we could rest for a little while, Arturo?” Cassandra asked. “I’m so tired I don’t think I could go any further if Mr. D’Arc himself were chasing us.”

“When he finds out you’re gone, believe me, he will be. He’s scarier than Spike.” Arturo took to the air to scan the area. He called down to the Princess, “Our only hope is to hide because we sure won’t be able to outrun him, and I’d never be able to fight him and win.”
