Tacoma Rainbow Postcards (Photo credit: Duncan James Livingston)
We recently received a form letter rejection ofENHANCEDfrom an agency based in Tacoma, where 41″ of rain fall every year. That’s 2″ more than the national average, and doesn’t even count Tacoma’s annual 4″ of snow.
We inferred Rejection #3 from a Del Mar agency’s non-response yesterday. Today, to commemorate the non-occasion by making something beautiful, I created a book thong whose ornaments and colors imply the sea.
Elation is the tide that ebbs and flows. Happiness, the wave that comes and goes. Beneath them both, unending currents roll, and so Resolve propels us to our goal.S.T. Ranscht
Somewhere beyond the sea, Somewhere, waiting for me, An agent stands on golden sands And loves all the pages I’m sending.
ENHANCED‘s Rejection N°2 arrived as a form email. It came from an agency in Colorado, so I thought it would be appropriate to focus on a meaningful creation that you might not consider classically “beautiful”.
It doesn’t matter if it’s by lack of response, form letter, or personal note. Ouch.
ALL the authors say rejection is a very big part of trying to get published. To commemorate each rejection we receive for ENHANCED, and prevent it from being totally depressing, I’ve decided to make something beautiful. Because…
This week Helen Espinosa has chosen Singer/Songwriter as Song Lyric Sunday’s theme. The name that immediately came to my mind was Carole King. (Click the link to read about her life and many ground-breaking awards and honors.)
Myopia creeps up on you until one day, you realize you’re squinting at the blackboard just to read the assignment. But because squinting solves your problem, you don’t even think to say anything about it to your parents. They usually have to notice you squinting at something else unless an observant teacher alerts them first.
And you end up with glasses. They make your eyesight great again, but now you have to remember to wear them. You have to make a new habit. I’ve done it. It was hard at first, but the improvement those glasses made to the quality of my life was so great, it wasn’t long before putting them on was a no-brainer.
Living kindly is like that. You have to see the world through a kindness lens, but that doesn’t mean you have to see the world through Rose Colored Glasses.
