“What about Cassandra and Arturo?” You. Wondering.

“Do you think we could rest for a little while, Arturo?” Cassandra asked. “I’m so tired I don’t think I could go any further if Mr. D’Arc himself were chasing us.”

“When he finds out you’re gone, believe me, he will be. He’s scarier than Spike.” Arturo took to the air to scan the area. He called down to the Princess, “Our only hope is to hide because we sure won’t be able to outrun him, and I’d never be able to fight him and win.”

Cassandra drooped to a stop amid the tall, twilit grass. “Then let’s find a place to hide. Every muscle I have is screaming from holding on so long, and my foot is killing me.”

“All right,” he said as he landed beside her. “I think I saw a sheltered place we can stop for the night. Even if Mr. D’Arc doesn’t find us, there are plenty of other dangers out here.”

Heading for the undergrowth in the woods ahead, Arturo led her to a hollow among a scattering of rocks. They stood at the opening of a cavern that never saw sunlight. “Here. We should be safe enough in here.”

Something growled.

To be continued. . .

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...
