Captain McWatt of the Light of Day Aero Squadron struck and tore, shredded and tossed every Marauder within his reach. Sirehta’s brothers turned on their captors with unleashed hatred.

The sergeant ducked away from the captain’s talons, clamping down on Sirehta’s neck to drag him toward the field, back to his commander. But Sirehta, with a twisting wrench of his body, jerked free to plunge his fangs through his assailant’s throat.

“Brothers, hold!” he yelled over the Marauders’ screaming as more members of the Aero Squadron descended upon them. “Did the King send you?” he called to the Captain.

“Yes. We are to clear the way for your escape.”

Looking first to his kin, Sirehta shook his head. “We will follow you back into battle and finish this.”

“Well, Princess, shall I address you as ‘your Supremacy’?” Elliot asked with a grin. The morning warmth had welcomed them on a long walk after breakfast in the bower.

Giggling, Cassandra tossed her head. “I was thinking, ‘your Elegance’ would do.”

“Would you settle for, ‘my only love’?”

“Oh, Elliot, that’s all I could ever want. I don’t know anything about being a princess, much less a queen. How am I supposed to do this?”

“Let’s wait till the war is over and Queen Lilian tells King Arnie you’re his daughter. Then, whatever you decide to do, we’ll do it together.”

She pressed against his chest. “Yes, my only love. Together.”

The kiss they shared eclipsed the rustling of the leaves just off the path.

To be continued. . .

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...
