Young Scout Philbin’s reckless race back to his own unit echoed the turmoil in his head. What’s the King thinking, trusting that serpent? He’ll probably eat them all before they can blink. If I were King, I’d tie that bugger’s mouth shut and… Hey, if he eats them, we’re gonna need a new King. Hmm, King Philbin… I’d definitely wear a crown. And have people wait on me. And eat off golden plates. And have a harem. And kiss all the girls…

Philbin and his delusions of royalty crashed through the underbrush, colliding with Knightling Barry, knocking them both to the ground.

“Hey, Phil! Youse all right?” Barry asked, first to right himself as he reached to pull the muddled scout to his feet.

His daydreams shaken from his head, Philbin snapped his mind to attention. “I have a message from the King. Where’s the lieutenant?”

“Here, Scout Philbin.” Lieutenant Terrance came forward. “What says the King?”

“This division is to hold the northwestern half of the perimeter, but not advance till his Greatness sends further orders.”

“Did he say what he’s waiting for?” the lieutenant asked.

“Sir, he’s made an alliance with one of the Marauders.”

Terrance’s eyebrows rose.

“We’re giving him time to recruit some of his friends to our side.”

“Fall in, Knights of Service! Let’s go hold that perimeter!”

As the Knights re-ordered their column, Philbin approached the lieutenant. “Excuse me, Sir?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think it’s wise to trust a serpent?”

“Scout Philbin, in all the years I’ve served King Arnie the Former, he has never led us into disaster. I trust his wisdom. I suggest you do, too.”

Philbin took his place, visions of vipers wiping out the entire Eastern Division churning his stomach, to be replaced by the far more comforting image of a gleaming golden crown. There’s always a first time, he thought.

To be continued. . .

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...
