Anthony must have told him what really happened in the Freelands. Lucy’s options were few. Tensed for flight, she continued to watch alongside the General as the stingers in the hollow cleared away rubble. She took the only chance she saw. “What happened here?” she ventured.

The smoldering wasp didn’t move. “A carefully timed rockslide allowing an amputation and the unfortunate escape of an unwilling spy.”

Trying to keep desperation out of her voice, she offered, “I can help. Do you want me to go find him?”

General Hai turned his head to face her. “No.” The word lingered above the bustle below.

From her deaf side, a squad of Stingers latched onto Lucy’s wings and legs, bringing her down, pinning her in place. Anthony climbed onto her chest, his tail poised over her heart.

The General flicked his wings to a hovering buzz, and peered at Anthony through the smoky haze. “When you finish with her, send what’s left to the Crone.”

The Assassin waited till the General flitted away. “It’s good to see you again, Lady Lucy. You know, I usually work alone, but so many of us are glad you’re here, I thought I’d share the pleasure.” He smiled, his tail a lightning strike of death.
