“Zee shortest way to zee Hive from here,” Marcel Pierre Clouseau told Elliot, “eez east srough zee Bols de Mort field, but eef you go zat way, you must be most cairful not to touch zem.”

“Bols de Mort?”

“Zey are treacherous flowers, beauteeful and deadly. Zey weell eenvite you to drink from zem, but eef you do, eet weell be zee last sing you evair do. Zey weell hold you een zeir bowls and you weell die zee long slow des of a forgotten preesoner.”

“Thank you, Marcel. I’ll be careful.”

Elliot raced into the woods, coming to a meadow of tall grass lit by the last light before the fire of sunset. Brushing across the field, the wind lifted moaning hums to Elliot’s ears. His skin prickled as he entered.
