“Stand down, soldier,” the King laughed. “You’re alarming our ally.”

Confused but obedient, young Scout Philbin scanned the Knights’ faces before stammering, “Uh… King Arnie, I’ve located the… um, Marauders.” He threw a quick glance at Sirehta. “They’re less than five minutes ahead, raiding the winter stores of the tree dwellers.”

“Then there’s no time to waste,” the King decided. “Captain, rally the Knights of Service. Sirehta, I regret I have no power to return you to your home. You’re free to go where you will or welcome to stay as a resident of the Kingdom of Bog.”

“Thank you, sir,” the serpent began, “To you and your people, I am obligated. I have seen the character of your Knights, and I would be honored to fight beside them to regain peace in your land. If you will accept, please, my offer of service, I will persuade my brothers to join us against the true enemy. We must repay our debt for the damage we have done. Only then will we decide our future.”

“I accept your offer most gratefully,” King Arnie replied.

A whistling shriek pierced the fresh blue of morning. A swift shadow crossed their path. Looking skyward, King Arnie the Former smiled.
