“Take a deep breath and hold on!” Barry shouted to his passengers.

They burst through the front line of the fire into a clearing on the edge of the river. Elliot shot a last look over his shoulder. Yvonne was gaining on them. We’re goners, he thought, closing his eyes against their imminent violent end.

The next jump rose higher than any of Barry’s previous leaps. Elliot was sure the owl had them in her talons, and death was moments away. This is it. Terror sealed his eyes, but he held tighter to Cassandra and whispered, “I love you!”

His love shouted, “Shut your mouth, Elliot!”

His eyes flew open in shock to behold an even greater shock. Directly above them, the *feathered fury’s fearsome claws stretched to pluck them out of the sky, yet Cassandra stared straight down.

They were falling. Falling away from Yvonne, toward a blanket of sparkling red berries — thousands of them bobbing up and down.

They were falling into the river.

Oh, no! Elliot thought, his eyes wide, Not again!

The breathless water engulfed him once more.

To be continued…

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...
