Elliot pitched the sweat-soaked lump of fluff at Yvonne’s head as Cassandra launched herself onto Barry’s back. Elliot vaulted up behind her and stuck himself to her shell as Barry plunged from branch to branch, closer and closer to the flaming hell below.

With screeching fury, Yvonne dove after them, her feathered bulk enshrouding all three in a shadow of doom, her razor-edged beak snapping each time Barry’s meaty legs extended behind him propelling them through the smoky gloom surrounded by raging death.

“To the right!” Elliot yelled. “There’s an opening!”

Barry hit the sizzling ground an instant before the demon behind him struck a blow that pierced Elliot’s tail and threatened to pluck him from his friends. Cassandra tightened her grip on Barry to fight Elliot’s pull on her shell, ripping her love from Yvonne’s grasp. As the crazed owl soared to avoid impact and circled around for the kill, Barry swerved and bounded over burning brush and scorched earth, leaping again and again in a reckless race to refuge.

Dripping blood and convulsing in pain as the specter of death swooped out of the haze, Elliot screamed, “She’s coming!”

To be continued…

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...
