Rejuvenation Complete

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and all the sons and daughters — because we wouldn’t be moms without the kids, right?

At least that’s what I’d always thought until yesterday. I guess I’ve been blinkered on the subject of motherhood. Oh, I’ve never thought motherhood was defined only by a biological bond between parent and child. One of my closest friends growing up had been adopted as an infant, but her parents sure were her parents. And growing up in the Sixties, we were exposed to just about every permutation and combination the definition of “family” could hold. I’ve even known women who had raised children who had experienced a miscarriage, or had lost one child to tragedy.

“So, what happened yesterday?” you might well ask.

I found out that a young woman I first met when she was a young girl during our Children’s Theater years writes a blog. Beautifully. Exquisitely. I didn’t know she could do that. She’s a young woman now of course, and she’s married with two children and a story of love, loss, and hope for Mother’s Day.

“And that affects me…how?” You. A little impatient for me to get to the point.

Here. Read it yourself. I’d love to know how it affects you.

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...

  1. So beautifully written. It touched a place in my heart that I don’t visit often. I have been blessed with four beautiful children and sadly one miscarriage. Today I will enjoy every minute spent with my children and grandchildren, but I will also say a little prayer for the sweet soul I didn’t get to hold. Thank you for sharing this with us. Have a blessed day!

    1. I’m sure you rejoice in your family every day, and hold the sweet soul in your heart. Bonnie’s writing is exquisite, isn’t it? I spent a couple hours yesterday going through many of her other posts. They’re filled with joy and gratitude, some great stories, photos, and videos, and every bit as well written.

  2. Happy Mother’s day Sue! Your young friend is certainly not alone. When I was pregnant with the boys, one of my flight attendant friends had her 7th miscarriage, but managed to come to my baby shower anyway.

    1. Happy Mother’s Day to you, Kim!

I knew a mother of four during our theatre days who miscarried her fifth. She handled it with such grace, and worked to make all of US feel comfortable, it was difficult to know how she did it. Then she had another child. I’m still friends with her eldest who now has two of her own.
