The moon had set and still King Arnie was awake, conferring with the Knights and Officers, checking and double-checking the remaining supplies the army would take to The Arids, visiting with the soldiers drifting in the doldrums between preparation and action.

He knew the importance of high spirits.

The Officer on Duty approached with tonight’s Runner who turned to the young soldier and drawled, “Thank you, Honey. Ah can find my way from heah. Don’ let me keep you from whatever it was you were doin’ before Ah arrived.” Pursing her lips, she whispered to the King, “Besides, you know how Ah like to watch ’em walk away.”

“Chloe, Chloe, Chloe. How long has it been? You’re looking more ravishing than ever,” King Arnie declared kissing her hand.

“Now, now, you naughty boy,” the glowworm laughed, “you know ain’t nothin’ ever gonna happen between us — you know entirely too much about me.”

“You can’t blame me for trying!” the King laughed.

“Ah never do.” She patted his hand. “It’s awfully good to see you, Sweetie.”

“And as happy as that makes me,” Arnie raised one eyebrow, “I’m sure you aren’t here making a social call. What’s the word?”

Her devil-may-care attitude vanished with her beaming smile.

“It’s time.”
