“…and Lady Lucy is dead.” Queen Lilian repeated in disbelief.

“Yes, your Magnificence,” the drenched Hopper said as rain dripped from his antennae to the floor. “She didn’t know the Assassin had escaped from the Freelands and beaten her back to the Arids. The General caught her in her lie, gave the order, and the Assassin carried it out.”

Holding herself erect, the Queen shouldered the news with deliberate calm. “Thank you, Drago. I’m sorry you had to witness her end. I’m afraid I need you to take this news to the Freelands Ambassador now. Please let the Hive Elite Captain know I wish to see her, then you may let your family know I’ve extended your duty today.”

“Thank you, Queen Lilian.” The trail of raindrops Drago Galadeen left as he exited the Queen’s Audience Chamber glistened like tears.

Vernon left his place by the door to put his arms around his Queen. Her sigh, overfilled with grief, sank to the floor.

“Perhaps it’s time to send in more than spies, Lilian,” he suggested.

“I agree, my love, but not troops — not yet. Even in this sad news there’s hope. Single raindrops join to become a storm; I think we should bolster Bog’s plan to build resistance.”

To be continued. . .

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...
