Accepting that Clifton would be his constant companion for the foreseeable future, Elliot followed him to the Baths. The splashing of ruffled feathers and exuberant bathers triggered memories of deep water panic, and Elliot hesitated entering the pool.

“Do you suppose we could find a quieter spot, Clif?”

“Yeah, I guess so, but you need to hurry so we can get back before the Queen does. The Lilian Pond is over that way. It’s not for general use, but you’re with me, so it should be all right this time.”

The noise of the main pool muffled as they passed beneath a wall of brush, and Elliot thought he heard a soft moaning ahead. Swiveling his eyes as he came through the opening Clifton made by pushing a low leafy branch aside, he spotted a prostrate form stretched over the edge of a lily pad. Elliot couldn’t tell if it was drinking or drowning.

“Hey, you!” Clifton yelled. “You’re not supposed to be here. Move along to the big pool!”

The wasp slowly lifted his head.

“Vernon!” Elliot shouted.

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...
