Beneath the churning web, agony’s wail rode the final unbreaking wave as it crossed the field to leave behind the silent, still shallows of death. The enemy Flyers who dared to attack its surface learned too late that the struggle to destroy it only drew the attacker further under. Those who witnessed it from above soon retreated toward The Arids.

Vernon and Ambassador Arturo waited at the web’s edge where an escaping whisper of breath hinted at the Wildlands ants’ approach. Commandant Marabunta was the first to emerge.

Bowing from the waist, the Ambassador said, “The Alliance thanks you from its many hearts, and welcomes you to Fen. We would be honored to have you join our coalition, but we are pleased to honor our agreement regardless of your choice.”

The Commandant’s antennae waved with her head’s nod. “After we complete our task and take count of our survivors, we will discuss your invitation and bring you our decision.” She lifted her face to the sky and inhaled. “They will return, you know.”

“We believe so,” Arturo agreed.

A command echoed around the field, and thousands of Weavers entered from every side to retrieve the silk. Only when they were finished could the ants clear the battle’s remains.

Clifford dropped from the swarm that had protected the Hive and was now effecting repairs and reinforcements against the next onslaught.

“Vernon, Auntie—” He looked around. “Her Magnificence asks that you meet with her in the Hive.”

Without a word, the Queen’s Liaison rose and dashed away.

To be continued. . .

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...

  1. I’m a few weeks behind in my Reader, and I saw you hadn’t posted for – to me – a few days, but now I see it’s closer to a month! Yikes! I hope everything’s okay!

    Thinking of you. *hugs*

    1. Everything’s fine, Vanessa! Thanks for your concerned thoughts. I’ve recently been inundated by sewing work, which is a labor intensive financial boon, so I had to cut back on writing. I’ve managed to write one short story, but had to face the reality that I couldn’t commit to the A to Z Challenge this year. Life is full and, aside from the itch to write, satisfying.

I will miss you for the Challenge though, but it's nice to know it's for a really good reason. 🙂
