Elliot’s eyes narrowed. “How do you know my name?”

“Good news still travels to the heart of the Ancient Forest.”

“Good news?”

“Yes. We’ve been expecting you,” the High Priestess confided as she limped down the steps to hunch before him.

“How could you know I’d be coming here? I didn’t even know I was coming here.”

“But Janesse knew.”

“Her name is Janesse? She works for you?”

“Oh, my, no. She was one of my students — a great warrior.”

“You train warriors?” Elliot couldn’t keep his skepticism from leaking out. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be rude, but you have to admit, it’s kind of hard to believe.”

The High Priestess laughed like crunching leaves. “I wouldn’t believe it myself. No, I train minds.”

“Like mind control? Is that how she got me to come with her?”

“Now, that’s just plain silly. The only mind any of us can learn to control is our own. Why did you decide to go with her?”

“Well, she asked me to. And she seemed so confident and candid and kind, it felt like the right thing to do.”

“And she’s beautiful…” the High Priestess prompted.

“That’s true, but I have learned that’s not necessarily an indication of trustworthiness.”

“Good,” she said, nodding.

“So who does Janesse work for? Why did she bring me here?”

“Queen Lilian of Fen asked her to bring you to me to prepare you for what’s coming.”

“Prepare me? How? For what? What’s coming? What is this place?”

“This,” she said, her stoop vanishing as she expanded her arms, “is the Tower of Honor. Come with me to the dining area. Your lessons begin now.”

To be continued. . .

Author: Sue Ranscht

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...

  1. Ah, up to date at last. Reading a lot at a time is better for getting into the flow of the story, though I must admit I’ve forgotten parts of the beginning. I’ve inundated your inbox with likes, I’m afraid. They serve to tell me where I’ve got to, but they also mean what they say on the button. Many times over.
