Song Lyric Sunday 3

Song Lyric Sunday

Broken heart

This week’s theme for Helen Espinosa’s Song Lyric Sunday is Breaking Up. I’m guessing most of us have played both parts, the breaker and the breakee. I know I have. It feels like I was on the losing side more often than the other way around, but when I look back, it was pretty much even.

So, why does it feel lopsided?

Maybe it’s because the two that hurt the worst were my first real love, and my last. Everything in the middle kind of blends together — except for the two where I know I caused as much pain as I’ve ever felt. And for those, I am truly sorry. Sorry for the pain I caused, sorry that I really had to leave.

But the best break up songs come from the breakee, don’t they? And they come in a few different flavors. The first time I was dumped set free, it crushed everything I believed about who I was. All I had left was doubt. It took six months of listening to six Barbra Streisand albums over and over and over… before I could begin to pull myself out of the deep dark hole I’d fallen into, and find myself again in the light.

But the last time… I got angry.

I didn’t want to hurt him; I wanted rise above him and erase him. My heart would not be broken again. Ever. Because that last time broke more than my heart, it broke my desire to fall in love, my habit of trusting someone else with my love.

But it gave me something, too. My son… and the absolute certainty that I don’t need anyone else to be complete. I have no doubt.

 Ex-Girlfriend by No Doubt

Lyrics from AZ Lyrics

I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them
And you know it makes me sick to be on that list
But I should have thought of that before we kissedYou say you’re gonna burn before you mellow
I will be the one to burn you
Why’d you have to go and pick me?
When you knew that we were different, completelyI kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriendI’m another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed

Your wildness scares me
So does your freedom
You say you can’t stand the restrictions
I find myself trying to change you
If you were meant to be my lover I wouldn’t have to

And I feel so mean, I feel in between
‘Cause I’m about to give you away

I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend (for someone else to take)
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend (am I making a mistake?)
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them (all the time that we wasted)
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girl, friend

I’m another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
I’m another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed

I’m about to give you away for someone else to take
I’m about to give you away for someone else to take

We keep repeating mistakes for souvenirs
And we’ve been in between the days for years
And I know that when I see you I’m going to die
I know I’m going to want you and you know why
It’s going to kill me to see you with the next girl
‘Cause I’m the most gorgeously jealous kind of ex-girl

But I should have thought of that before we kissed…

I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them
I kinda always knew I’d end up your ex-girlfriend

I’m another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
I’m another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed

This story has a happy ending. After many fulfilling years of taking care of myself and my son, I have no doubt who I am:
I Think I'm The One
Wink 2

Having survived valve repair surgery and an experimental cardiac bypass at age 5, three years before it was an accepted medical procedure, Susan grew into the size of her overworked and enlarged heart. Maybe she thought she had enough to give it away -- twice. Both times, she had to retrieve the shattered pieces and puzzle them back together. She thanks her Dad for the only advice of his she ever followed to the letter: "Never get married. Learn to take care of yourself." So of course she is a writer. Susan has co-written a YA SciFi novel, and has three more novels in various stages of evolution. She's had several short stories published in other people's anthologies, some of which were contest-related. Let her tell you a story...

  1. Interesting, but I understand moving on is tough. Mostly I was the dumper, but there were break-ups in between…always got back together, until I would realize it was time to move on. I didn’t want to give up on love and trust…and I didn’t.

  2. Ex-Girlfriend is certainly angry enough sounding. I kind of like the ‘revenge’ scenario songs. While I am not generally a country and western fan, Carrie Underwood’s ‘Before He Cheats’ speaks to my villainous heart.

  3. I love empowering break up songs. I also loved your realizations. Breaking up is hard, but sometimes it ends up being the very best thing that could have happened. Go you! 👍🏻😉

Thanks for playing along. I had no idea I liked No Doubt so much. Lol

    1. Glad to help you find a new bit of fun. I was drawn to them years ago when they came out with Bathwater. It’s not a break up song though, so I went with their obvious choice. Still, I do love the strength. Thanks for the game!
